SET Index Rallies to 1,595: Can Banking and Energy Sectors Hold the Gains? (September 2026)

The SET closed at 1,595.58 on September 4, up 18.66 points on banking and energy buying. Can the gains hold through the September 16 FOMC meeting? Here's what Thai equity investors need to consider.
SET Index Rallies to 1,595: Can Banking and Energy Sectors Hold the Gains? (September 2026)

September 4 delivered the best single-session gain for the SET index this month: an 18.66-point climb to 1,595.58, driven by buying in banking stocks and energy producers. After two sessions of losses—1,575.07 on September 2, 1,576.92 on September 3—the bounce looked decisive. Whether it holds depends almost entirely on what the Fed does on September 16.

What Drove the Bounce

Two sectors did the heavy lifting: banking and energy. Banking stocks tend to outperform when global central banks signal rate stability—less borrowing cost pressure on corporate borrowers, more stable credit quality for loan portfolios. A statement from a Fed official suggesting rates would likely be held if inflation stabilizes was enough to trigger buying in Thai bank names. Energy stocks—PTT, PTTEP, and sector ETFs—also rose, which is counterintuitive at first glance: oil prices gained on Iran tensions, which is inflationary. But oil producers benefit directly from higher crude prices, even when the broader macro implication of “oil up” eventually weighs on growth stocks and consumer names.

Where the SET Has Been This Month

The index has traded in a tight range between 1,575 and 1,600 through the first week of September. That’s not a bullish trend, but it’s also not a breakdown. The 1,575.07 September 2 low was a fear reaction to the Iran-oil-inflation trade. The 1,595.58 September 4 close is roughly where the index was before that sell-off. Net of the week’s drama, the SET is essentially flat—which, given the external noise from Iran, Fed uncertainty, and oil, is arguably a reasonable outcome.

What This Means for Thai Equity Investors

The banking sector’s performance on September 4 reflects the sector’s current positioning. Thai banks—Kasikorn (KBank), SCB, Bangkok Bank, Krungthai—are navigating a low-rate domestic environment (BOT at 1%) while collecting the spread between their cost of funds and lending rates. If the Fed’s September hold removes uncertainty from the global rate picture, Thai bank stocks could see continued interest. The key risk: credit quality in a slowing economy. If corporate loan defaults tick up—particularly in the SME and property sectors—the sector’s appeal reverses quickly.

PTT and PTTEP gained on September 4 as crude prices firmed on Iran news. As long as Brent stays above $85–90/barrel, Thai energy producers have strong earnings support. The September 4 rally in energy stocks was partly a catch-up trade after the September 2 selloff, which had hit energy stocks despite their benefiting from higher crude—a short-term mispricing the market corrected.

The Numbers That Matter

The SET is at 1,595.58. The 2026 range has been roughly 1,540–1,640. The index has not broken above 1,600 and sustained it yet this month. Three consecutive daily closes above 1,600 would shift the technical picture toward a breakout attempt. Below 1,575, the near-term bullish case weakens significantly.

Watch trading volume. A rally on thin Bangkok volume doesn’t carry the same conviction as one backed by institutional flows. Foreign buying was notably absent during August’s consolidation—its return (or continued absence) will be a key tell for whether this bounce has legs.

What Could Break the Rally

  • Fed surprise on September 16: any signal of a hike pushes the SET toward 1,560
  • Iran escalation: oil above $95/barrel creates inflationary pressure that hurts non-energy equities
  • Thai bank earnings: Q2 2026 results due this month; weaker-than-expected provisions or rising NPLs would hit the sector that just led the rally

The Practical View

If you’re already long Thai equities through an LTF, RMF, or direct SET position, September 4 tells you the market has buyers at the 1,575 support level. That’s reassuring. It’s not a reason to add aggressively, because the September 16 FOMC meeting introduces genuine directional uncertainty. The cleaner move: hold current positions, keep some cash available, and let the Fed meeting resolve before deciding to size up. Markets that rally strongly into uncertainty tend to give you another entry after that uncertainty resolves.
