Thailand SEC’s Spot BTC and ETH ETF Plan: What Q3 2026 Actually Looks Like

The Thai SEC is targeting Q3 2026 for spot BTC and ETH ETF rules. Bitcoin derivatives were approved in February. Here is the timeline and what it means for Thai investors.
Thailand SEC’s Spot BTC and ETH ETF Plan: What Q3 2026 Actually Looks Like

Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission is moving to launch a spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF framework in Q3 2026, building on a sequence of regulatory steps that began in earnest in early 2025. The Cabinet approved Bitcoin for derivatives markets on February 10, 2026. Spot crypto ETFs are the logical next step, and the regulator has been public about the Q3 timeline. If this lands on schedule, Thai retail investors will have regulated, exchange-listed access to BTC and ETH without holding crypto directly — through their standard brokerage accounts on the SET.

The Regulatory Path So Far

Thailand’s first spot Bitcoin ETF technically launched in 2024 through One Asset Management, but it was structured as a fund-of-funds accessible only to institutional and high-net-worth clients. The Q3 2026 framework is different: it targets retail access through a domestic ETF listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, similar to how the KTAM GLD ETF (SET: GLD) gives retail investors gold exposure without holding physical gold.

The February 2026 Cabinet approval of crypto derivatives was the preceding regulatory step. It amended the Derivatives Act to formally recognise Bitcoin and other approved digital tokens as underlying assets for futures and options on the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX). Regulators typically move from derivatives approval to spot ETF approval — it is easier to price and audit a spot ETF when futures markets already exist for hedging and arbitrage.

What the ETF Would Look Like

Based on how the KTAM GLD ETF model works and the SEC’s stated approach, expect the BTC and ETH ETFs to be feeder funds investing into established global products (similar to how GLD feeds into the SPDR Gold Trust). This means Thai investors would be buying a locally-listed, baht-denominated wrapper around a global Bitcoin or Ethereum vehicle. The ETF would trade on the SET during Thai market hours, with a management fee from the Thai fund manager plus the underlying fund’s expense ratio.

Key implication: the price will track BTC and ETH in baht terms, meaning you get both the crypto exposure and the USD/THB currency effect. At current levels — BTC around $62,000–63,000 and USD/THB at 33 — a BTC ETF unit at 1/100th of a Bitcoin would be priced around 20,460–20,790 baht.

Timing Risks

Q3 2026 is the target, not a guarantee. Thai regulatory timelines have slipped before. The SEC needs to finalise custody rules (who holds the underlying Bitcoin, and under what capital requirements), establish authorised participants for the creation/redemption mechanism, and complete a public consultation round. The parallel SEC consultation on net capital and custody requirements for digital asset exchanges, which was open as of June 2026, feeds directly into ETF infrastructure readiness.

There is also the market environment factor. Launching a spot crypto ETF when Bitcoin is at $62,000 and fear index is at 23 is a harder sell politically than launching at $80,000+ with optimistic sentiment. Regulators pay attention to timing. A Q4 2026 launch is plausible if Q3 consultations run long.

What Thai Investors Should Do Now

If you are waiting for a regulated ETF to add crypto exposure, that pathway is coming. Meanwhile, consider: Gulf Binance and Bitkub already offer regulated access to BTC and ETH in Thailand, with the full SEC investor protection framework. The ETF will be more accessible (no crypto wallet needed, no KYC at a crypto exchange, trades through your existing stock broker) but it will carry fund management fees on top of the underlying BTC or ETH movement. For cost-conscious investors who are comfortable with direct crypto exchanges, the existing licensed platforms remain the lower-fee option.
