Each dot represents one Fed official&#8217;s projection for the fed funds rate at the end of each year shown: typically the current year, the next two years, and the longer run. The chart does not label which dot belongs to which official &#8212; you see the distribution of views, but not who holds them.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly: the dots are projections, not commitments. They represent where officials think rates will be given their current economic forecast, which changes every quarter. Markets pay attention because the median dot &#8212; the middle dot in each year&#8217;s column &#8212; signals the consensus view. When the median dot moves up, markets interpret that as the Fed leaning more hawkish.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_June_2026_Dot_Plot_Showed\"><\/span>What the June 2026 Dot Plot Showed<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The last update was in June 2026. At that point, the Fed was holding at 3.50-3.75% and most dots for year-end 2026 clustered around that range, suggesting no further moves. The median suggested a hold for the rest of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>After Jackson Hole, the market is now pricing that picture differently. If the September dot plot shows the median year-end 2026 dot moving up to 4.00%, that signals the committee expects to hike and hold &#8212; not hike and immediately pivot. That is the most important number to find when the release drops at 2:00 PM ET on September 16.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Find_the_Key_Number_in_30_Seconds\"><\/span>How to Find the Key Number in 30 Seconds<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When the September 16 release comes out, find the column for 2026 and count the dots. If the majority are at or above 4.00%, the hike is almost certain and the committee sees no cuts this year. If the median is at 3.75% (current level), the hike is a single move with no follow-through expected. If dots cluster below 3.75%, the committee is already thinking about easing &#8212; bullish for risk assets.<\/p>\n<p>The 2027 column is equally important for Thai investors. If the 2027 median dots show rates falling to 3.00-3.25%, that suggests the Fed is planning to cut next year &#8212; which would eventually narrow the BoT-Fed gap and provide relief to the baht. If 2027 dots stay at 3.75-4.00%, the gap stays wide through 2027, which is a prolonged headwind for Thai capital flows.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Longer-Run_Dot_Why_It_Matters_for_EM\"><\/span>The Longer-Run Dot: Why It Matters for EM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is also a longer-run column showing where officials think rates settle permanently. In the pre-pandemic world, this was around 2.5%. If the September update shows the longer-run dot rising toward 3.0% or above, that is a structural signal: the era of ultra-low rates is over, and the new neutral is higher. For Thai investors, this means the BoT-Fed carry differential is a structural feature of the new regime, not a temporary anomaly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reading_the_Language_Around_the_Dot_Plot\"><\/span>Reading the Language Around the Dot Plot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The dot plot is released simultaneously with the FOMC statement and Fed Chair Warsh&#8217;s press conference. Watch for three things: whether Warsh describes the rate decision as insurance against inflation (hawkish) or policy recalibration (neutral), whether he mentions data-dependence in a way that leaves the door open for November moves, and whether he acknowledges the global impact of US rate policy on EM economies. Any comments about dollar strength or global spillovers suggest the committee is at least aware of the baht pressure, even if they will not act on it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Takeaway_for_Thai_Investors\"><\/span>Practical Takeaway for Thai Investors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The dot plot release on September 16 at 2:00 PM ET (1:00 AM Bangkok time September 17) will be the most market-moving piece of information of the week. If you hold SET equities, dollar-denominated funds, or Thai gold, the 2026 year-end median dot is your number. It tells you whether the committee thinks it is done, or whether more is coming. More coming means baht pressure and SET headwinds continue.
