The logic: Thailand’s economic growth remained subdued despite strong tourism numbers, and the BOT prioritized supporting demand over defending the baht. The Fed, meanwhile, has held at 3.5%–3.75% since late 2025, with three hawkish dissenters at its July 29 meeting pushing for additional hikes.

The result is a rate differential that has not been this wide in the BOT-Fed relationship in years. Thai retail investors, most of whom have primarily held domestic fixed income, are now facing a meaningful opportunity cost question.

What Thai Government Bonds Actually Yield

Thai government bonds (TGB) currently yield roughly 2.0–2.5% on 2-year maturities and 3.2–3.8% on 10-year maturities. These yields sit above the BOT policy rate of 1%, which is the normal shape of the yield curve, but well below US equivalents.

US 2-year Treasuries yield around 4.3–4.5%, and 10-year Treasuries yield approximately 4.6–4.8%. The yield advantage of US Treasuries over Thai government bonds is 200–250 basis points at the long end and 200–230 basis points at the short end. That is a substantial gap to give up for domestic convenience.

The Currency Risk Equation

Here is the complication that makes the comparison honest: if you buy US Treasuries as a Thai investor, you are taking on USD/THB currency risk. The baht’s 1.6% year-on-year weakness against the dollar means that currency losses can offset part of the yield advantage. If the baht weakens another 2% in the next 12 months, your 4.5% US Treasury yield becomes 2.5% in baht terms — still better than a 2.5% Thai bond, but only marginally.

If the baht strengthens — say, back toward 32.00 as the dollar weakens — the US Treasury advantage disappears and you are left with a smaller yield on a currency that cost you.

The honest answer: currency-hedged US Treasury exposure (available through several Thai asset managers via offshore fund wrappers) offers the yield advantage without the currency risk, but hedging costs eat into the spread. Hedged US Treasuries in baht terms currently yield approximately 2.8–3.2%, which is comparable to mid-duration Thai government bonds — the advantage largely disappears.

What This Means for Thai RMF and Mutual Fund Allocations

Thai retirement mutual funds (RMF) with fixed-income mandates are navigating this gap in real time. Several Thai asset managers have increased allocations to offshore bond funds as part of their RMF fixed-income component, precisely because hedged US Treasury yields are competitive with domestic alternatives once the full duration picture is considered.

For Thai investors using RMF accounts for their December tax deadline contribution: if your fund house offers both a domestic bond RMF and a global bond RMF, check the underlying holdings and fee structure of each. The global bond RMF may carry higher fees that reduce the net advantage.

For Short-Term Cash Parking

For Thai investors parking cash for 6–12 months: domestic Thai short-term bond funds (ตราสารหนี้ระยะสั้น) yielding 2.0–2.2% are simpler and eliminate currency risk entirely. The convenience premium is worth it unless you have a large enough allocation that the incremental 0.5–1.0% difference in yield matters materially.

The Bottom Line

Unhedged US Treasuries win on yield but carry currency risk that can fully offset the advantage. Hedged US Treasuries are competitive with mid-duration Thai bonds but not dramatically better once hedging costs are included. For Thai investors with straightforward domestic mandates, Thai government bonds remain appropriate. The opportunity in this rate gap is real, but it requires either accepting currency risk or paying to hedge it — neither is free.

BOT sits at 1%.
