That widened the rate differential with the US to 2.5 percentage points, making carry trades attractive: borrow baht cheap, park money in dollar assets yielding 3.5%. The late-July slide to 33.8 was the predictable result. The partial recovery since then reflects easing Hormuz-related energy pressure, not any policy change.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Rate_Divergence_Problem\"><\/span>The Rate Divergence Problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>United Overseas Bank analysts say 1% is the terminal rate for this cycle and expect the BoT to hold through 2026 and 2027. ANZ disagrees sharply \u2014 they still forecast two more 25-basis-point hikes in Q3 and Q4 2026. If ANZ is right, the baht gets structural support. If UOB is right, the 2.5-point differential persists and carry pressure continues. The data genuinely does not settle the argument yet.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_This_Means_for_Thai_Investors\"><\/span>What This Means for Thai Investors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Investors holding dollar-denominated funds \u2014 US equity funds, dollar bond funds, international ETFs through Thai brokers \u2014 have had the baht&#8217;s 1.81% annual depreciation working in their favour. Returns in baht terms are higher than the underlying dollar performance suggests. That advantage reverses when the baht firms and you convert back.<\/p>\n<p>Thai exporters in automotive and electronics benefit from converting dollar revenue back to more baht. Companies with dollar debt or heavy raw material imports are on the wrong side.<\/p>\n<p>Thai gold shows the dynamic clearly. 96.5% gold bars rose from 65,250 baht on August 5 to 67,850 baht on August 11 \u2014 a 3.9% move in six days. Part reflects international gold prices; part reflects the baht buying fewer dollars. Gold has functioned as a two-layer hedge in 2026: global safe-haven demand plus local currency depreciation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_Watch\"><\/span>What to Watch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The September 17 FOMC meeting is the next major pressure point. Markets price a 61.9% probability of a hold at 3.5 to 3.75%. A surprise hike pushes USD\/THB higher. The BoT MPC meets again in late September \u2014 any hint of reconsidering the February cut will move the baht immediately. Watch the vote split; a 4-to-2 hold reads very differently from a unanimous 6-to-0.<\/p>\n<p>33.08 is not a floor. The baht can drift back to 33.5 or beyond if Hormuz tensions flare again or if Q2 Thai GDP data disappoints.
