If you haven’t maximized it yet, you have roughly six months left. The three main fund structures — Thai ESGX, standard Thai ESG, and RMF — all offer different deduction amounts, holding periods, and flexibility. Holding period: 5 consecutive years from first investment date. This deduction sits in its own bucket and does not count toward the combined 500,000 baht limit that applies to RMF, SSF, provident funds, and pension insurance combined.

Thai ESGX (the LTF switcher route): Designed for investors who previously held Long-Term Equity Funds (LTFs) and switched all units into Thai ESGX between May 2 and June 30, 2025. Those Category 2 investors get a maximum tax deduction of 500,000 baht over five years — 300,000 baht in the first year (2025) and up to 50,000 baht per year from 2026 to 2029. If you didn’t switch LTF units during that window, ESGX still allows new purchases as Category 1 (same as standard Thai ESG, 300,000 baht cap).

RMF (Retirement Mutual Fund): Deduction of up to 30% of income, subject to the shared 500,000 baht combined ceiling with SSF, provident fund, and annuity insurance. RMF holds until age 55 minimum and at least 5 years of continuous holding — stricter than ESG’s 5-year rule. No selling before 55, or you repay all deductions claimed plus interest.

The Key Difference: Separate vs Shared Bucket

The most important structural fact: Thai ESG and Thai ESGX deductions are separate from the 500,000 baht combined limit that governs RMF, SSF, and pension products. This means a taxpayer can potentially claim up to 300,000 baht from Thai ESG plus up to 500,000 baht from RMF/SSF/pension combined — a total deduction of up to 800,000 baht if they maximize both buckets.

In practice, most Thai investors haven’t fully funded both buckets. If your combined RMF/SSF/pension contributions are already at 500,000 baht, adding Thai ESG on top at 300,000 baht is pure additional tax relief. If you haven’t maxed RMF yet, the question is which bucket to fill first.

Which Structure Wins Before the 2026 Deadline?

For investors who want maximum flexibility and have not yet used the Thai ESG bucket: Thai ESG (standard) is the clearest choice. Buy before December 31, 2026. Hold for five years. The 5-year clock starts from your first purchase in the fund, and you can continue buying in future years without restarting the clock on initial units. After five years, you can sell without penalty.

For investors who already own Thai ESGX through the LTF switch: your 50,000 baht annual deduction for 2026 is already locked in from the 2025 switch. No additional action is needed for that benefit — just verify the holding.

For investors focused on retirement: RMF’s age-55 lock-in is a real constraint for younger investors, but the 500,000 baht combined ceiling is a separate pool from ESG. The optimal move is to fund both buckets rather than treating them as alternatives.

Fund Selection Within Thai ESG

The “Thai ESG” label covers many underlying funds. The main variants available from Thai asset managers include:

Equity-focused Thai ESG (investing in SET-listed ESG-screened stocks) — higher potential return but equity risk. Examples: SCB Thai Sustainable Equity Passive Fund, B-TOP-THAIESG (Bualuang Top-Ten ESG).

Bond/fixed-income Thai ESG (green bonds, sustainability-linked bonds) — lower volatility, appropriate for investors closer to the 5-year exit window.

Given the SET is up 48% year-over-year, equity-focused Thai ESG funds are sitting on strong NAV gains. Buying now means paying a higher NAV — but the tax deduction on this year’s contribution still applies regardless of entry price.

The Bottom Line

Six months before the enhanced deduction closes, the action item is straightforward: if you have unused capacity in the Thai ESG bucket (up to 300,000 baht of your income’s 30%), deploy it before December 31. The 5-year holding clock is shorter than RMF’s age-55 requirement, making Thai ESG the more accessible vehicle for investors under 50. Don’t leave the deduction on the table — the enhanced 300,000 cap reverts to 100,000 baht for purchases after 2026.

Thai ESG’s enhanced 300,000 baht deduction closes end-2026.
