If you held USD-denominated assets through that period, you captured the 3.5% spot gain on top of the yield differential, for a total return roughly 6-7% on the dollar exposure.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a real-money outcome that beats most equity strategies YTD in Thailand.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_makes_the_trade_work_right_now\"><\/span>What makes the trade work right now<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Three things have been aligned in carry&#8217;s favor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BOT consistently at 1%, with no near-term hike signaling<\/li>\n<li>Fed funds elevated relative to Thailand&#8217;s policy stance<\/li>\n<li>Middle East tension keeping a bid under the dollar through risk-off flows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When all three reverse simultaneously, the carry trade unwinds violently. None look near reversal currently, but that&#8217;s the nature of crowded carry positioning \u2014 fine until it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Thai_retail_actually_accesses_the_carry\"><\/span>How Thai retail actually accesses the carry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For most Thai retail, the carry trade isn&#8217;t FX leverage; it&#8217;s holding USD-denominated cash equivalents or short-duration USD bonds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>USD savings or fixed deposit at Thai banks<\/strong> \u2014 Bangkok Bank, KBank, SCB all offer USD accounts. Yields are bank-set and lower than US Treasuries, but no FX conversion friction<\/li>\n<li><strong>US T-bill or money market funds via Thai or offshore brokerage<\/strong> \u2014 direct yield access, slightly more friction on conversion and tax reporting<\/li>\n<li><strong>USD-denominated mutual funds from Thai AMCs<\/strong> \u2014 Krungsri, SCBAM, Bualuang offer USD bond and money market funds for THB-denominated accounts. Highest convenience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For positions over THB 1M, the direct US T-bill route via offshore brokerage gives the cleanest yield. For smaller positions, the Thai-AMC USD bond fund is the practical pick despite the small expense ratio.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_risk_most_retail_underestimates\"><\/span>The risk most retail underestimates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The carry trade&#8217;s worst weeks are usually concentrated. The USD\/THB unwind in late 2024 dropped the pair 4% in eight sessions. If you were long USD with leverage, you&#8217;d have given back six months of carry profit in a week.<\/p>\n<p>The mitigation is to sit with non-leveraged USD exposure \u2014 cash equivalents, not margin. Crowded carry positions unwind first<\/li>\n<li><strong>Middle East de-escalation:<\/strong> a sustained ceasefire or diplomatic breakthrough pulls the risk-off bid out of USD, drops USD\/THB 2-3% in days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_honest_take\"><\/span>The honest take<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The carry has been a 6-7% annual return at low operational complexity for Thai retail. The trade isn&#8217;t broken, but it&#8217;s been the easy trade for long enough that crowding is real. New money entering now should size smaller than money already in the trade \u2014 partly because the asymmetry has shifted, and partly because you&#8217;re entering after the easiest gains have already accrued.<\/p>\n<p>For investors with no USD exposure: 15-25% of investable assets in USD-denominated short-duration instruments is a reasonable allocation for the next 6-12 months.
